Content Reputation Issues

How can I use MxToolbox Inbox Placement to detect content-related issues that prevent my email from making the Google, Yahoo!, or Outlook.com Inbox?

Reputation issues with Inbox Providers like Google, Outlook.com, or Yahoo! can be caused by specific content in your email or reputation issues with your domain due to too many messages being marked as spam.

Inbox Providers often scan an incoming email for language, phone numbers, email addresses, links, and images that they consider undesirable or linked to spam. In addition, your email sending domain could have a poor sending reputation with the Inbox Provider, either because of past content or recipients marking your content as spam.

Steps to isolate the reputation issue are:

  1. Send a blank text-only email to MxToolbox's Inbox Placement addresses from your standard email marketing system. Do NOT include a header, footer, signature, or body markup (no HTML or CSS).

If this email fails an Inbox, you might have a Domain Reputation Issue. If this email is accepted at all Inbox Providers, then you might have a Content Reputation Issue.

  2. Send three distinct emails to isolate the potential content/markup issue:

    1. Header only with the above text

    2. Body markup only with the above text

    3. Footer/signature only with the above text

  3. If one or more of the emails in #2 fail the Inbox, that one (or more) has been flagged by the Inbox Provider for content reasons. Make tweaks to your content, resending as in #2, until all individual pieces of your email make the Inbox.

  4. Combine your tweaked header, body, and footer, then resend. You should now make the Inbox!

If your next email campaign fails to make the Inbox, you should check the content.
